This is why you take note of stuff you don't want to forget.
NO Snuffy was an animal that Big Bird played with at Snuffy's house so that no one else saw so everyone else thought that Snuffy was an imaginary friend. When parents started to complain that the kids were angry that Big Bird was thought to be lying or telling stories that's when they brought Snuffy into the "light" and let everyone see him. I remember because I was one to the parents to protest.

when snuffleupagus (sp?) was first introduced, yes, only big bird could see him, but after a while (year, maybe less?) the rest of the cast could see him too.
