Every year there are new toys that come out to help children’s imaginations grow.  2009 has proven to be a great year in terms of exciting new toys from stuffed animals to learning toys, to building sets, check out this guide to the latest and greatest toys of this year.

Elmo is one of the hottest new toys of 2009.  He talks, he sings, he laughs he dances.  Many children enjoy watching Sesame Street and look forward to the last 20 minutes which is Elmo’s World.  This darling toy has been a hit in 2009.

Another big hit with little kids has been the ride on animal toys.  From horses, to dogs to dinosaurs, your child can ride on an animal while it neighs, barks, or roars and moves around.  While these ride on toys can run you $100-$500, they provide hours of fun for your little guy or gal.

For girls, one of the top toys is American Girl dolls.  Most girls ages 5-10 know all about them.  With their beautiful hair and darling historical outfits and books, they are all the rage.  Other 18 inch dolls and clothes are also available for lower prices.

Barbie dolls are popular as well as princesses.  Princess dress up costumes from fancy Cinderella dresses to Sleeping Beauty costumes and accessories can provide years of dress up play and fun for your Disney fanatic.

For boys, Magnetix are in right now.  From roller coasters to galaxys, your child can create nearly anything with these creative toys.  Legos are also very popular with boys and they can make and create anything with them.  They spend hours working on Lego projects.

A Build a Bear wearing boy clothes is also a great gift for young boys.  Build a Bear items are inexpensive, quality and provide hours of cuddly fun for your little animal lover at home.

Older children also like to play and create.  For 10+ try an art set, scrapbook, digital camera or other creative items to help them learn and grow.  At this age, many children like to read books, listen to music, and watch DVDs.  Ear piercing is a popular gift for girls ages 10 and over.

Don’t forget the babies.  Babies like to play with toys too.  While they are not very old, they do need attention.  A lullaby glowworm is a great gift for babies and it provides a nightlight as well as a song to help your little one go to sleep.

Whether you have a baby, toddler, young child, or older child, this guide should help you find the hottest new toys in 2009.  Many online retailers will offer sales and free shipping on their toy websites, so check them out before heading out to your local super store.  Best of luck finding a great toy for every child in your family!

She may last for a year or two, but I bet on 6 months. A girl I babysit was obsessed with blues clues, and watched it once a day (as tv for 20 m/o is really taboo, and should be kept to a minimum). I'd get her Elmo colouring books and photocopy the pages so she can colour them for hours on end. Try getting her a couple puzzles with Elmo, and ONE Elmo toy, a soft, plush one that can be washed multiple times. Rent Elmo movies or something every week, or borrow them from the local library. It should keep her happy, but maybe keep it to one movie every two days, so it's special. Get her an Elmo cup as a reward for something, like good behaviour or potty training (I was trained when I was that age!) In all, try to only get things as a reward, so you really should only be getting one plush toy, a colouring book, one cup (she'll love that, and use it almost everyday!), a puzzle or two, and a library card (for all those books and movies you'll be borrowing from the library.) It shouldn't be too expensive, and this will probably last 6 months or so, certainly not more than a year and a half! These things she can use for a while, and she'll LOVE them during her Elmo phase.

We have this discussion at our house at least once a year when we realize how ridiculous the bill is getting. I don’t watch the tv at all; all my shows I stream over the internet. My husband loves his cable programming, however, and I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of it.
