there's a big difference between bearing "higher wages" and bearing "government-mandated wages"…
…I was hired by a company during the recession of the early 1990s…I was offered a decent wage and was happy to get it. Several years later, when the market and profits were good, my company was hiring entry-level people with "signing bonuses" of several thousand dollars. I never complained that I didn't get one because I understood that the market was different then….good times means good wages.
…so let me ask you this: when times are bad, what is your allowable percentage of wage cuts? How many people can be laid off without you playing the "greedy corporation" card?
As for the Bonus Question: The minimum wage was never supposed to be a "living wage"…it was a minimum set so that entry level, unskilled and young workers could have some spending money while either getting an education or getting the skills necessary to get a 'real" job…

Why not take the tube from Paddington Station to Edgware Road station? It's one stop. The trains run until 1:30 AM.
